what’s life like at the hatchery place?

When you arrive at here, you’ll find yourself in the heart of USJ, Subang Jaya, a humble, unassuming terrace house surrounded by the rhythm of local life. It’s a lived-in home, where creativity thrives, stories are shared, and the pace is slower—on purpose. You won’t find polished marble floors or concierge services, but you’ll find cozy nooks to read, welcoming spaces to paint, and plenty of time to just be.

The neighborhood is alive with its own charm: nearby parks where locals gather to jog, chat, or simply enjoy the fresh air. It’s simple and grounded, the kind of place where life happens naturally.

The Hatchery Place is about connection, creativity, and finding joy in the everyday. It’s the quiet focus of writing in your journal, the easy conversations shared over a meal, or the calm of taking a walk around the neighborhood. This is a retreat where you can relax, be yourself, and take things at your own pace.

our rooms

Our rooms are simple, functional, and full of character, designed for creatives and independent souls who value comfort with a personal touch. Each room has its own personality, shaped by the care and creativity that went into it.

The Artist Studio is the largest room in the house, once Elaine’s private art studio. It’s bright, spacious, and inspiring, with a queen bed, a sofa bed, and an attached bathroom. The room features a private bathroom, large desk, Harman Kardon speakers, and even a yoga mat. (sleeps max 3 pax)

The Writer’s Room is for those who love quiet, cheerful spaces. With a queen futon bed, a small writing desk, and shared bathroom access. Bonus: the bed frame was hand-built by us using pellet wood, because we like making things personal. (sleeps 2)

The Minimalist Room is all about simplicity. Every piece of furniture here—from the single bed to the wooden workspace—was hand-built by Kevin with care and precision. It’s a cozy, compact space for light travelers who appreciate clean design and the beauty of minimalism. (sleeps 1)

All rooms come with access to shared spaces: the kitchen for cooking, a washing machine, and a coworking area downstairs.

what kind of experience is this?

It’s not a retreat in the traditional sense, where everything is planned for you. Here, you live like a local, finding your rhythm and creating your own experience. This balance of structure and freedom makes it ideal for those who don’t want to be babysat and prefer to carve their own path.

The Hatchery Place offers the space and support for you to focus on what truly matters to you, surrounded by the hum of everyday life rather than a curated retreat setting. Our stay options are designed for independent, self-directed individuals who enjoy their own flow and don’t need constant hosting or hand-holding.

We, the hosts & facilitators, don’t live in the house. Instead, we come by on scheduled days for your painting, woodworking, or transformation game sessions. The rest of the time, the house is all yours to live, create, and explore at your own pace. Think of it as your temporary home—where you can cook your own meals, go for a walk in the nearby park, or dive into your projects in complete freedom.

This setup is perfect for people who value autonomy and thrive in a low-key, non-intrusive environment. If you’re looking for a retreat where someone plans your every moment, this might not be the right fit. But if you enjoy the idea of living like a local, having creative sessions woven into your stay, and embracing the quiet autonomy of a shared home, you’ll feel right at home here.

The Hatchery Place is about giving you the structure to create and connect, but with plenty of room to do things your way. It’s coliving with a creative retreat twist.

how long can you stay?

You can join us for one week, two weeks, or even a month. Honestly, we believe there’s something special about having more time. It’s not a secret—it’s just how life feels when you’re not rushing.

A longer stay gives you space to settle in, find your rhythm, and really dive into what matters to you. Whether it’s completing a project, exploring new creative expressions, or simply getting into a routine that feels good, time can be your greatest ally here.

But we also know not everyone works that way. Maybe you only have a week—that’s okay too. The important thing is that you come as you are and leave feeling like you got exactly what you needed.

want to stay for only 20 days?

Our retreats begin on the 1st of every month, and the first week is packed with activities designed to bring everyone together—welcome dinners, group workshops, and shared creative moments. If you arrive late, you’ll miss these special events that set the tone for the month.

We recommend arriving at the start to experience the full retreat flow. The beginning is lively and connective, while the rest of the month gently winds down, giving you space to reflect and dive into your creative process.

But if you really only have 20 days, book the month anyway. Come a few days late or leave a bit early—it’s all good. Life is flexible, and so are we.

While group activities like yoga, game nights, or hikings are fixed and can’t be rescheduled, we can arrange private sessions for painting, woodworking, and the transformation game later in the month for our month-long stayers if you can't make it for our scheduled group ones. This way, you won’t miss out on the core creative experiences.

why are there no private or group guarantees?

Each retreat depends on who books that month. Sometimes, on slower months, you might just find yourself as the only guest in the house. And while we can’t predict when this happens, it’s a privilege for the lucky one who gets to experience it, so it would be just you and the facilitator. Imagine having the whole house all to yourself. Every activity—painting, woodworking, transformation game—becomes a fully immersive private session tailored just for you. It’s like having a personalized retreat with our full attention, giving you space to dive deeply into your creative journey.

But don’t worry—you’re not alone. Some group meals still happen, with our team and local friends joining to create a warm, lively atmosphere. Shared hikes and local community events go on as planned, giving you opportunities to connect with the locals even on a “quiet” month.

Whether you’re here with others or on your own, everything planned will still happen, just in its own unique way. We let the size of the intake decide. It’s always intimate, always intentional. Sometimes, the universe hands you exactly what you didn’t expect but might love the most. Who knows? You might even love it more than you imagined.

If you’re planning ahead and want to share this experience with friends or family, you can gather a group of up to 5 people to book together. Just make sure to plan and arrange early, as all retreats start on the 1st of the month. This way, you’ll know exactly who you’ll be sharing the space and sessions with.

what about food?

MEALS ARE NOT INCLUDED.

We believe food should be simple and flexible. For breakfast, our kitchen corner is stocked with basics—think fruit, bread, oats, cereals, eggs, and coffee or tea—so you can start your morning the way you like. We replenish it every few days to keep it fresh and easy to access.

For other meals, the choice is yours. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores just a 10-minute walk from the house if you feel like exploring. Prefer to stay in? Food delivery is super convenient here, with lots of great options just a tap away. Or, if you enjoy cooking, the kitchen is always available for you to prepare your favorite dishes. We stock basic ingredients like rice, pasta, canned beans, flour, instant noodles, oil, sugar, salt, pepper for your convenience. With grocery shops just 5mins away, feel free to buy your own additional items and store them here.

And once in a while, let’s shake things up with a spontaneous group dinner outing. It’s not on the schedule, but when the moment feels right, we’ll gather whoever’s around and head out for a meal together. No pressure, just good company and local flavors to share.

By keeping things flexible, we make your retreat more affordable while giving you the freedom to enjoy meals the way you like.

where your payment goes to?

Your stay supports a greater purpose.

We use the funds from your stay not just to run The Hatchery Place, but also to dream bigger. Each stay helps us move closer to manifesting a more spacious and suitable home—one that can better support creativity, community, and the vision we hold for this retreat. When you join us, you’re not just participating in the present—you’re contributing to the future we’re building together.

who is it for?

Anyone who’s ready to slow down, create, and enjoy the balance of independence and shared living. It’s for people working on a personal project, exploring their creative side, or simply taking time to reflect. It’s also for those who value the spirit of coliving—where small actions, like cleaning up after yourself or sharing a meal, help the space feel like home for everyone.

However, this isn’t the right place for tourists or those looking for a vacation spot. If your goal is purely sightseeing or lounging without engaging in the creative or communal atmosphere, there are plenty of Airbnbs out there with better pricing for that purpose. The Hatchery Place is for people who are here to create, connect, and embrace the slow, meaningful pace of life alongside others.

what if I’m a digital nomad?

You’re welcome here if you’re a digital nomad who values slowing down, simplifying life, and making meaningful connections. This isn’t a hustle-driven coworking spot—it’s a space to find balance. If you’re working remotely but crave time to reflect, create, and connect at a slower pace, The Hatchery Place could be exactly what you’re looking for.

There’s space to focus on your work, whether in your room or in our shared coworking area, with reliable Wi-Fi to support you. But this isn’t the place for back-to-back calls, endless deadlines, or a nonstop grind. Instead, it’s for those who want to live more intentionally, embrace a slower rhythm, and connect with others in a thoughtful, supportive environment.

Here, it’s not about doing more—it’s about doing what truly matters, in a way that feels grounded and aligned with your journey. If that resonates with you, you’ll feel right at home.

Fun Fact:

When we started hosting in 2016, The Hatchery Place was all about the hustle and flow of remote work. Back then, we were in our early 40s, building a space that reflected where we were in life—active, ambitious, and always on the move.

Now, in our late 40s, we’ve shifted gears toward a slower, more intentional lifestyle, and The Hatchery Place has grown with us. It’s now a space for creating, reflecting, and connecting at a deeper, more mature level. It’s less about keeping up with the grind and more about embracing a way of life that feels simple, intentional, and fulfilling.

If you’re a digital nomad ready for this kind of shift, we’d love to welcome you into this slower, more intentional rhythm.

can I stay for more than 1 month?

Short answer is yes.

We currently offer retreats on a month-to-month basis. If you’re interested in staying longer, we recommend starting with one month and letting us know early if you’d like to extend. Extensions are subject to availability, as we plan our retreats around monthly intakes. Staying for more than one month also means starting the retreat cycle again with a new intake of people. It’s a fresh rhythm—new faces, new energy, and the chance to experience the flow of workshops, social activities, and quiet time all over again.

If you love the idea of this life-cycle rhythm, that’s totally okay! It’s a unique way to deepen your experience here and embrace the evolving dynamics of The Hatchery Place.

our promise to you

When you leave The Hatchery Place, you’ll have more than memories. You’ll have a piece of art you created, a spark of inspiration, and a connection to people who came here as strangers but left as friends.

You might even shed a tear on your last day. That’s normal here.
