Forum: Building a Sustainable, Green & Community Conscious World

Forum: Building a Sustainable, Green and Community Conscious World

How do you envision our future? With the growing issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, human overpopulation and overconsumption, experts predict that we are heading into a bleak future. With such critical environmental issues and the rise of more social ills, how do we expect our Earth to thrive and continue to support the future generation?

The most important question is: Can you, the man or woman on the street, make a difference? The answer is “Yes.” As human beings, we have a responsibility to leave the world better than we found it.

Discover how you can be part of a sustainable world by teaming up with others to form a community impacting the world through your conscious actions. This Forum features community leaders who are blazing the trail in Malaysia and changing the people’s mindset, one person at a time.

About Shirllin Ching

Social Entrepreneur

Founder, Kampung In the City

My name is Shirlin, and I’m the founder of Kampung In The City. I am dedicated to developing a sustainable community that lives harmoniously in alignment with nature.

Since I was young, I’ve been a child who wondered at the mysteries of life. I have explore the world, from the great mountains of Kailash and the Himalayas to the deep oceans of Cuba and South Africa, and from the material world of finance to the invisible inner world of energies around and within us, and I am still exploring

One thing that has become very clear to me is the infinite intelligence of Mother Nature and how we can learn immense wisdom by being still and observing nature. Even in movement and action there can be stillness, and in this stillness within is where the magic unfolds: We are all interconnected.

I always joke that I am a Jill of all trades and master of none. The term “all trades” comes with a caveat; it’s about everything that revolves around nature, living in harmony together with the wonderful mysteries of life. Kampung In The City is seven years in the making, and it reflects my own process of evolution and growth from an ignorant and arrogant city girl who knew nothing about soil, plants and how interconnected each system is to each other. Today, learning that the health of our air, water, earth-soil, microbes, insects, plants, animals, and humans are all closely interconnected; when one gets affected and damaged, everything else subsequently disintegrates as well.

Here at Kampung In The City, we strive to bring back the diversity, ecology and health of our environment by introducing and educating people about more sustainable practices such as growing our own food forest, wild fermentation, natural plant medicines, rain water harvesting, in situ composting and future projects such as solar energy, water filtration, biochar, wood vinegar, biogas, and etc. We aim to create a circular system where little gets wasted, and most resources are used up and regenerated by Mother Earth into the abundance of harvest that she so generously shares with us.
